As part of a Volontariat de Solidarité Internationale (International Solidarity Volunteering) with France Volontaires, I carried out a mission as a journalist and trainer at the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation for nearly two years. During that time, I covered news related to the Covid-19 pandemic, produced fact-checking videos to counter misinformation circulating on social media, and took part in the coverage of the legislative and presidential elections, which marked the country’s first democratic transition since the 1977 coup d’état.
My role also involved one-on-one training of journalists in video editing software, particularly Adobe Premiere Pro, as well as supporting the production of news stories in French. This experience was equally enriching for me: I learned Seychellois Creole and was able to produce long-form reports in that language on topics close to my heart, such as environmental protection.
